City of Perth

The City of Perth is a local government area and body, within the Perth metropolitan area, which is the capital of Western Australia. The local government body is commonly known as Perth City Council. The city covers the Perth central business district and surrounding suburbs. The city covers an area of and had an estimated population of 18,988 as at June 2012. These figures would be more than doubled under controversial boundary changes proposed by the state's Coalition Government to take effect from July 2015.〔Bickers, Claire; Quartermain, Lisa (City of Perth boundary changes include Leederville, Burswood, Beaufort St ) at PerthNow, 28 July 2013〕〔(Government alters amalgamation plan to include all of Vincent in City of Perth ) ABC News, 4 November 2013〕
==History==

The City of Perth was declared on 20 September 1856. In 1915, it absorbed North Perth (1901) and Leederville (1895) municipalities, and on 1 November 1917, Victoria Park was also absorbed. A year later, it absorbed territory from Perth Road Board including the Belmont Park racecourse. By 1962, the council had 27 members representing nine wards.〔WA Electoral Commission, ''Municipality Boundary Amendments Register'' (release 2.0), 31 May 2003.〕
On 1 July 1994, following the passage of the City of Perth Restructuring Act (1993), the City of Perth was broken up and a revised (and significantly reduced) City of Perth, Town of Victoria Park, Town of Cambridge and Town of Vincent were created. The first elections were held on 6 May 1995, with 8 councillors and a mayor.
